I have an application settings page with a bunch of checkboxes. How should I choose the default checked state of the checkboxes?
I see the following options:
Always set the default state to unchecked, but this leads to negative statements in the checkbox...

Definitely Number 2.
Choose the state that the user most likely wants (or that causes least damage) and a text that is easiest to understand .
I see no reason why all checkboxes should be unchecked by default.
I'd choose 2.

When I hit TAB for indentation of code, I like it to get a real TAB. Meaning that when I select that, I only have one large thing selected. Now NetBeans is inserting just 5x spacebar when I hit TAB. Can I change that? Where?

You can.
Go to Tools-> Options-> Editor-> Formatting and uncheck Expand tabs to spaces .

I have a program I'm working that is a ticker across the bottom of the screen. All that functionality is fine, but I've noticed that when I hit Alt+Tab I see it in the list. I already have ShowInTaskbar set to false, but I don't want my program to appear...

Use:
Shift+Enter for a new active tab
Ctrl+Shift+Enter for a new background tab
Edit: You can also when reuse current tab is disabled (you can of course use Click instead of Enter).

I find this less confusing than repeatedly hitting tab while ALT is depressed.
You can mouse-hover the thumbnail preview at the center of the screen while you keep ALT+Tab on the thumbnails.
