I don't want to download and install SP1 for Team Foundation server 2008 if I don't need to. But I'm not sure how to determine what version our server is currently running?

If there is data the server is SP1, if there isn't then it is pre TFS2008 SP1.
If you have Visual Studio Team Explorer 2008 SP1 populated in the Last Check-in Date column.
This tool looks like it could do the job.

There is a hotfix for the same error signature, different conditions but it could be the same underlying cause ... .
Still searching for a solution though...
I have the exact same problem with Hudson CI, so I don't think this is related to your CI server .
What is the best way to go about upgrading TFS 2005 to 2008? Also, what about the Team Build scripts ("Build Types"), are those compatible with Team Build 2008 or do they need converted/migrated somehow?

As to the advantages of SQL 2008 with TFS - It's all about BIHi Rajah There is no license....
In other words, a separate SKU for SQL Server 2008 can be purchased and used with TFS as part of the TFS product materials).

I tried this with beta 2 of TFS 2010.
So there should be no reason they can't co-exist.
I know for a fact that all of the TFS related databases (except sharepoint and reporting server) start with Tfs.

Do you have SP1 installed....
If someone's locked it then I have get told by TFS at that time, otherwise I just work with the file.
Why do you care if someone else has a file checked out? TFS supports multiple it out.
