By doing this you are sending the audio to your speakers cable or satellite, connect the optical to the cable box instead of the TV.
The receiver and out to your tv.

You'll need to get a HT receiver, which amplifies the output signal of the TV to drive the speakers....
When you say speakers for the TV, are you thinking of hooking them directly to the TV? Because that isn't going to work.
