If your messages can really be any size then TEXT would be betterIf by "messages" you mean something like SMS or IRC, stuff with a defined limit then I think system has them).
VARCHAR is the most appropriate.

I want to archive the text messages on my WM phone to my PC, preferably as XML. Can I access them from a PC application, e.g. through RAPI? I have no experience in WM development, just PC, and then mainly Delphi.

I use an app called G-Backup, which automatically forwards any sms's I receive to my gmail account so I always have a copy no matter what PC, Mac or Linux box I happen to be at .
