Are you in London? Perhaps things are different there.
Where I worked we dealt with tickets for several to the theatre alone all the time and I've never had this problem.
That would be an independant decision by the theatre.

If not lastminute, or if you can't get someone....
Zif you can get someone to go to the box office, you will avoid nasty but worth having a look x I use thisistheatre.com (they have discounted tickets); lastminute.com.
Book through the theatre.

It's just the theatre tickets, for obvious reasons, which are regional and scarper! just checked Odeon and standard tickets for 2D films are now £9 (!!!) so this is a 50% saving though as some sell ....

My coworker is upset because they were denied admittance to a local theatre last night to watch a play. She and her husband purchased 2 tickets, but planned on taking their two children (8 months & 5 years old) and having them sit on their parents laps...

I work in theatre, and I don't know of any theatre that allows a lap child that doesn't need a ticket.
I guess i'd put the cut off at 2 years old .
For an 8 month old but a 5 year old? Um yeah, that kid needed a ticket.
