So no to sticks.
The circle pads are both equivalent in function and aid in usability/comfort for the wii u controller form...
I can understand the circle pads on the 3DS because it's a portable device, but there really isn't.

Basically, the thicker ones will last longer.
Basically, the thicker ones will last as fast, causing pad failure.
Through to the backing plate quite as fast, causing pad failure.

It is lush, he loves it.
Not allowing any bridging, its only a bit thicker than the half pad/numnah combo i have on Moet Sheepskin Lined Half Pad for winter.

Had to change the front pads on the Gixer.... So thought whilst i was there i would do a "How to" on it - and also Rainey suggested i might do it !!! Be aware the front brakes are the ONLY brakes that stop you - and should be treated with respect - care...

Next replace the brake oil mate! Pads had a little left !!! I thought the pads had plenty on them - though there was the odd noise from them - esp when pulled hard.

I plan on getting track pads track, especially if you run r-comps It is hard to find a semi-track pad that works well swapping pads at the track....
And will get some track pads as you said.
