My step daughter found a lg. dead rat in the toilet bowl. She has a single home...no baement. How can she prevent this from happening again?

OK, we've recently had a problem with the toilet tank and the plumber told us never to use those things that you drop into the tank to clean it because they cause slowly destroy the inner workings in the tank.
I've seen this type of cleaner advertised...
