If your text editor is to be useful long term it needs to have pretty (The ability to compile with an external program directly from your editor, and the ability be used as a test of 3 above....
In that would also be very useful.

Do you use "hard wrapping" (either yourself or automatically by your editor) by inserting newlines into your source document at a certain line length, or do you write your paragraphs in one continual line and let your editor "soft-wrap" for you?

That is, I try not to hit the "enter" key for a new line, but when the editor soft-wraps, it actually inserts a newline character.
Typically I have my editor insert newlines.

I'll support Pablo by saying that Notepad++ really is a very convenient editor....
One thing for javascript coding, irrespective of your favourite JS Library.
I personally use UltraEdit.

PROBLEM: I use Drupal with a rich-editor, and the rich editor likes to clobber my text by stripping out the indentation and formatting. This would be unacceptable in a desktop editor, but people seem to tolerate this with in-browser wyswigs.
