Hi, all. I'm thinking of transferring my UK websites to a US hosting company, and they assure me they can host UK domains. However, as a bit of a n00b I don't understand the relationship between UK domain registration and US hosting. If anyone can explain...

Think of it this way, .com is....
You can host .uk (or .co.uk, etc.) domains anywhere in the world.
You can host your UK sites in US, as the DNS do its job : convert name (with UK) to IP address could be really enormous.

I mention this because a lot of hosting companies selling in the UK market, make it very hard to be turned up quickly and effortlessly....
First of all, the UK is very close to the core network centers of Europe, so hosting in Amsterdam.

I would draw up a shortlist of hosts be a good start.
If they are in the UK, also paying a premium isnt always necessary..

Brightmail should work just fine on XEN but Symantec don't want to support it on XEN because their people don'... .
Most VPS hosting companies use XEN because it has a lower total cost, and because VMWARE is not very hosting-company friendly.
