I have dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 & Windows XP. Would like to do a full install of Windows 7 over the XP partition.
My assumption is that I can install windows 7, but it'll overwrite my boot files (from grub or whatever ubuntu uses). How do i set it back up...

But if you want a simple way, Ultimate Boot CD includes Super Grub Disk that provides the option-windows-7-and-ubuntu-in-perfect-harmony This worked out very well.

I tried to install Ubuntu on my Dell laptop, having Windows 7 Ultimate Edition..when the installation is about to complete it throwing one error "Permission Denied". I also tried to install Run as Administrator,but getting the same errror. Please help...

If you were.
It looks like, from your comments, that you are trying to install Ubuntu from INSIDE Windows (using Wubi).
Install using the desktop icon.
The cd or dvd should boot, select try ubuntu:

Can I install Linux Ubuntu on a Ex HDD ? I surrently use Windows 7 Ultimate on My Main Drive so would I need to use a Boot Manager also ?.

If you allow Ubuntu to install its bootmanager with the default settings, you could run into problems later if decide to uninstall Ubuntu....
The problem is the boot manager.
There is no problem installing Ubuntu on an external drive.

To try is a newer version of Ubuntu.
