Discussions about unreal tournament

What do I need to do to convice Unreal Tournament 3 (on steam) to host a LAN Game? I appreciate that this is a question about a game. But it's a really a technical question about a network on which a game will run. We have 2 computers. One is mine, the other is my wife's. Operating XP Home and Win7 Ultimate. We both have steam accounts... You can ping and see each other over SMB, but that still doesn't necessarily mean that all the required ports are open to play the game .
