G ! After an avast reinstall, I might have wasted 2½ hours.
I couldn't tell whether avast was or wasn't downloading the Virus Definitions Updates.
There was no particular indication by the Hard Drive Activity LED that the Update might have been in progress...

To kill sound: right click on avast icon -> Program Settings ->....
Settings -> avast! antivirus branch -> click on 'automatic vps update' -> click on the 'sounds' drop down menu -> select 'none' -> apply.

I just installed Avast 6.0, and I downloaded the
updates file vpsupd.exe, but when I run the file,
I get this message:

Why would you need to update the program, when you are alreadyWhich avast!....
Installed..?? Have you even rebooted after the first installation of avast, and before trying to update
from within the program (Avast) yet.

I mean that maybe you are already using the last definitions available? Look at http....
The same problem, but i repaired avast and rebooted and it updates now.

I could not get email, in avast email settings it changed the POP3 server to port 995 from 110 which my email uses, and turned TLS on for SMTP and SSL on for POP3.
Only since I got the update of virus definitions why would it do this?
It took me 2 hours...

The VPS shouldn't do anything to the avast, Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL account, settings email account settings you don't have any SSL/encryption enabled or avast can't scan the content.

I think when Avast autoupdates there should be some kind of activity shown in the taskbar Avast icon so that users get to know that its updating.

When your try to do a manual update & if at the same time autoupdate is running, Avast GUI opens on update page & nothing happens there, neither the automatic update is shown there nor Avast mentions on February 16,....

Side note...you might want to think twice before allowing ... .
Try the repair and keep us up to date.
So while in Safe Mode you are without
avast protection.
Safe Mode does not allow avast to load the resident shields.
avast running.
