What is Vertex and Pixel shaders? What is the difference between them? Which one is the best? Thanks!

Most of the "cool" stuff is done in pixel shaders in OpenGL) - Calculates the colour of a pixel on the screen based on what the vertex shader passesA Pixel Shader is....

In a Direct3D application filled with Sprite objects from D3DX, I would like to be able to globally adjust the brightness and contrast. The contrast is important, if at all possible. I've seen this question here about OpenGL: http://stackoverflow.com/...

Pushing the ramp up and down increases or decreases brightness DESTBLEND = ONE and then... .
Anything that doesn't at least support SM 2.0 is ancient is to use the gamma-ramp functionality .
Just use a shader.
To generate the textures.
It would be cool if we could save the shader previews. I know they are small detail but good enough for a very small thumbnail. You could save a clip file, save a preview of it then see this in the OS file browser when opening clip files or browse folders...

But we definitely see the need for more easily identifying and differentiating clip files, TGDs, and other TG files .
We do have some plans for addressing this kind of issue in the future, although not necessarily in the specific way you suggest .

use the image map shader rather than a heightfield load - is there any advantage to doing it that way a setting "Use settings from colour tab...", I dont have that.

Shaders Quality This controls the use of refraction of the textures rarely do you need....
UMA memory size This only applies to integrated graphics, then drop this option down a level .
To automatically adjust, use that instead.
