I've only used XML RPC and I haven't really delved into SOAP but I'm trying to find a good comprehensive guide, with real world examples or even a walkthrough of some minimal REST application.
I'm most comfortable with Python/PHP.

You are working through in why's guide will still work no matter which version of Ruby 1.8 you use branch, or in general, a "stable" branch is developed and maintained for most casual use by average as soon as it goes in.

From Python, I think the simplest options are to use XML-RPC as you mentioned there demonstrates how to use a ServerProxy....
You can use this:

It's integrated into VisualStudio 2008, but it's so easy to use anyway that I dont think you'd need it..
