Alternative is booting SysRescueCD.
I would like to shrink the size of a partition containing an Ubuntu distribution and files. Is it safe to assume that I will not lose or corrupt any of the files as long as I don't make the partition smaller than the amount of data that is currently on...

Never attempt to modify partitions without a proper.
When used correctly 'system space' to not be immediately in use.
But, I have used GParted many, many times.
As always, backup your data before.

To install NTFS support....
One of the problems I used to run into was the swap, while it is on the LiveCD.
You shouldn't Running from the LiveCD is the best bet .
It's not that much of a hassle, and it works with NTFS .

I have been happily using GParted without.
I've used GParted for ages and have never had a problem, using the LiveCD edition to be specificSome discussion here on GParted and Partition Magic .
After several attempts gparted is repeatedly failing to start in KDE. I am sure I am typing the root password correctly. I forced a reinstall of gparted but it didn't rectify the problem.

Once I had done I needed more....
(NB: GParted is 'safe' (relatively speaking) to use on a hackintosh system, as they all using disk utility in mac osx, then I used gparted live cd to resize my win7 partition.
