I would like to shrink the size of a partition containing an Ubuntu distribution and files. Is it safe to assume that I will not lose or corrupt any of the files as long as I don't make the partition smaller than the amount of data that is currently on...

Never attempt to modify partitions without a proper.
When used correctly 'system space' to not be immediately in use.
But, I have used GParted many, many times.
As always, backup your data before.

When I installed linux, there was a program that ran during installation which allowed me to allocate space from my hard disk to create a new partition. I think this was the GNOME Partition Editor; gparted .
Essentially it resized the (one and only) partition...

But now it seems needing to buy a copy that will support 1TB drive or 2TB drive and pay $60 or $70 for it... (the newest version on Amazon.com is a 2003/2004 version)

GParted cannot shrink the partition since it says there are 5 bad sectors that are hardware related. (Scan disk on Windows XP can't fix them).
So, after booting up the GParted disc, I used the Terminal to do a
ntfsresize --bad-sectors --size 63G /dev/...

That's not really hard - get this, it's really hard to comprehend - the version of GParted used in Solaris isn't affectedWe're not affected by the bug.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and Gparted not recognizing my partitions correctly.
I read that sometimes there's a problems with HP 4 partitions but they all suggested to delete those partitions and I don't wanna do that.
