Make sure youYou can use an SSH tunnel.
Otherwise, you can just do a tunnel on the VPS and keep it alive before you go to work.
When running TOP on our VPS the idle CPU usage number doesn't change. Is this a property of a VPS?

VPS.NET is a new cloud based VPS....
Don't know how things will be long-term, but support has been great so far .

If data you want to backup [ whole system or just some part of it ] resides on lvm volume - use lvm.
I'm curious how VPS accounts work. I know my shared hosting provider can look through my files since they've changed things in the past. If I purchase a VPS account, like from Linode or Slicehost for example, would the folks there be able to see my clients...

What they could do however is shut your VPS down and then mount the virtual disks much as Carson says but even easier -....
A VPS just makes extracting the "drives" easier them the password.

If you go with a VPS obviously you can run Django and php together hosting providers will provide less help than expensive ones.
