Are Linux systems so secure that they cannot be infected by virus ? Do we really require anti-virus for linux ? Why windows get more virus attacks? Is the windows less secure than Linux ?

Linux does have vulnerabilities, but generally these are not exploited a virus writer's return on investment, and the average Linux user is more knowledgeable than the average frustrate ....

People new to Linux after installing first ask about anti-virus,when they are told that its not required they show disbelief thinking that its a big lie.The are convinced that Anti virus is must as in windows.

There are antivirus scanners for Linux like F-prot, and of course ClamAV but Clam be a virus carrier...not actively infected and trying to spread it.
A couple meg in size.

My computer seems to be infected with a virus. In process explorer, the services.exe shows many outbound smtp connections. It seems that some malware is trying to send spam mails continuously to some smtp server.

First, disconnect yourself from the network
Next, I'd go to another computer, get a copy of an offline virus scanner, boot from known-good media (like a recover CD) and run the virus....

Do you find the crippling effect that most anti virus software has on a computer's performance worth the "security" they provide? I've never been able to really tell myself its worth it, and have used my computer without "protection" for years without...

I have my end up with a virus then....
It also helps to leave out administrative privileges for most users .
I moved to linux mainly so I wouldn't have to run-virus installation.
virus software doesn't bog down my system.

That they have to click on and get their machine infected it's
called a /virus./
But with Linux when someone, on any OS.

I have a high end virus detection running on my Mac.
Recently I have had many Spam emails with attachments. The attachments had viruses or trogans, most likely Windows ones. When I marked them as 'Junk' there was no issue, then I deleted the Junk mail...
