Why not use Vista's own backup utility? Shadow Copy with the Acronis post.
Imaging using your software of choice (clonezilla as I had left off within an hour or so.
Backups and restoring is rather quick too.

In GNOME and KDE, (and from what I hear, OS X aswell), you have a feature called multiple desktops. It allows you to have multiple screens of apps running, without having the same number of monitors. Does such a program exist for Vista?

Suppose I write a simple program and compile it under Windows XP. Will that same executable work out of the box in Windows 7? What about more complex stuff? Were any OS libraries or stuff like that removed?

They make updates to the compatibility in Windows all the time so if a program did not work in Vista for you programs that worked in XP and didn't work....
Most , if not all programs that run in Vista, should run in Windows 7 without problems.

Ensure you and install that instead.
You should be able to upgrade to Vista ultimate using the standard Ultimate media, you should just the Vista upgrade advisor first to ensure your PC is capable of running Vista Ultimate.

One of the biggest reasons that software of older XP software ....
It depends on the nature of the software.
I wouldn't be surprised if much of the software that doesn't work is due to using non-api entry points permissions.
