    Browsers in cases of HTML being served (regardless it being XHTML as in this case).
    It should have that DTD in its DTD catalog.
    IE simply doesn't support XHTML.

    I have no idea why this occurs, but you could work around it like this: <style type="text/css"> .searchInput { overflow: hidden... .
    The input is coming out at 103px wide, while the select is coming at 99px wide .
    You're right, there is a 4px difference.
