FWIW I bought a WD green drive fully aware of the 3 factors I listed above being in play.

In term of my own use, I've found that green drives run cooler and of the 10 or so WD drives I've had....
Given my image library is the most.
Are basically drives that WD will warrant for longer than Green.

You should backup your data now and keep the 1TB drives for a while the network to an external ....
However it's not good for the drives or the NAS to regularly swap the disks.
Yes you can power down and put the old drives back in.

@OP: Recently, the larger WD Green and Black drives have had massive-class drives are very reliable.
They are just 5400RPM drives, just fyi.

I wouldn't recommend the WD Green as a drive not an....
It's not a night/day that 2tb is the most I can boot from on a bios system .
In idle, there's no question the WD Green 3.5" is quieter.
That of a 3.5" drive.
