I would imagine that on a jailbroken phone you could read the DB, but using the normal SDK this is impossible .
In short - no, SDK does not provide access to this information .

That looks more like a model-view-presenter type architecture.
Having viewmodels with a reference back to the view seems a bit fishy to me though.
Option 1 looks about right, give the view a reference to the viewmodel.
