In trying to determine the answer to this, I've found a lot of stuff talking about how they used to hand-draw them, that the art of shading is dying out, etc. But I guess more what I'm wondering is how they knew in such detail what the elevation was of...

Stuff from the beginning back when there were only 3 satellites max in sight & still had, and Wikipedia says that since air pressure changes as the weather does, they have to be periodically.

UK and whilst I can get many satellites in the arc from 53E to 45W, I notice
I'm missing a few satellites....

It would appear there's a big slug of solar energy inbound. At worst these cause communications disruptions and play hell with satellites, at best they give a nice light show to those of us in the northern latitudes. The cooler heads are estimating this...

At present the Russian photoreconnaissance satellite programme appears to be totally reliant on the annual Kobalt-M missions - lasting 3-4 months - and presumably images from Resurs-DK (1).
