You can probably find online some adapters for your specific the black wire is ground and the white....
For plugging in data and input devices to a computer, power can go out of them to charge devices, but as far as I know power CAN'T go in.

I have a 15khz chassis board that has Red, Black and White wires for the power connector, now i would have assumed that the red was for live but it appears to be attached to the metal frame of the monitor, so that must be ground right?? Is there a rule...

White would be neutral by Amercian standards, and hot is commonly used for black.

White smoke often is a sign of water (and more knowledge haha) Nope, no other warning lights
It wasn't a massive amount of white smoke, just of power issues since the light....
Control unit would pick up on that, so lights would pop up .
