Seems like Windows 7 Start doesn't allow you to do this. Neither to use DVDs, even if you use an external utility. Is there a way so that I can extend my desktop to my monitor? Or will I have to install Win Xp on this netbook?

I don't think you can do this natively from Win 7 but you can anyways, it takes away a lot of the other limitations of starter edition as well.
Such as customization and domain support (XP Pro).
