1)1st win7 was installed
2)in extended partition- with root and swap partitions ubuntu 12.04 was installed from live cd.
after completion of the ubuntu install on reboot got the boot choice ...

Actually, if you can spare a 8GB flash drive,
I would suggest using that for the Ubuntu install installed first, then used a USB drive to install....
Personnally, I would install Ubuntu first.

These are the only 2 OSs I have installed.
So, I removed ubuntu and now when I choose Win7 in grub, it takes Win7 and Ubuntu.
Is only presented if a choice exists.

Enable remote access on the Win7 machine, then use Terminal Server Client on Ubuntu to access it.

If you do copy files to /home then consider using Ubuntu One or take regular backups.
And when you copy files to Ubuntu, they are stored within this single file from a hard shutdown).
