I just did it last night! Pretty neat....
When you have linux installed and you want to install Windows 7, it's really really easy .
It could be a little harder to install linux whena Windows OS is already installed .
Personnally, I would install Ubuntu first.

If less than 4gb RAM I prefer 32 bit for better.
Developers have optimized for that scenario.
I have a vintage 2003 ThinkPad with a P4 and maxed at 1Gb RAM running XP. Should I move to Win7? Or...will I be better off with XP. Please advise and explain your answer. Thanks, -james

Since the new kernel improvements the overall performance on lower end machines has improved massively .

You can choose to make it permanent....
Do you have the Windows 7 Guest additions installed? I would just start the VM and select form the VM Menu Bar, Devices -> Shared Folders - you use a simple dialog allowing you to select a path on your local machine .
The Win7 speech/dictation panel appears and is recognizing speech intended to be recognized by our application. Is it possible to prevent Win7 speech application from doing so...or is the solution to change our app to inproc? Is the Win7 panel required...

I'd say let Win7 stay as "raw better performance out of it than when....
I did a quick peek that Win7 would detect and install and had no problems at all.
I upgraded my Inspiron 1721 a while back to Win7 x64 without any issues.
Is there any difference between the two OS in terms of one being better for a development environment?

However, I think you would be better off installing.
Upgrading is possible by hacking a file and rebuilding the ISO file or launching setup from the hard disc, like @taspeotis says .
That was running Win7 RC.
