I have a retail version of Windows XP on a PC I no longer use. I would like to install Windows 7 on a new pc (nothing is on the hard drive). Can I purchase a Windows 7 upgrade, and install it using the existing Windows XP CD to upgrade from?

Unfortunately....
No you can't do that with Windows, you may be confused due work etc on a main desktop pc.
Of course you can not do that according to the license agreement, if you run it on two computers, and it can not be activated successfully.

I know for previous versions of Windows, you were allowed to install the same key onto 3 different computers. Is this the same with Windows 7?

I'm curious if it's possible to retrieve the license keys of a Windows XP machine from within a LiveCD environment in Ubuntu. Normally, if I was in Windows, I would just run Magical Jellybean Keyfinder, but is there some way to do this from within a LiveCD...

It pulls the license key for most MS software, as well.
For Windows 2008, I believe you can identify a trial version through looking at the System option I have used frequently is Magical Jellybean.
