Two days ago I got an "unsolicited" windows update page. I mistakenly "went through the process." Now my laptop(ME) will not start past the "ME logo" point. . .even in the safe mode.

Windows Update is perfectly safe.
And if you are at all suspicious, you can always just go directly to Windows Update yourself.
Microsoft has said over and over.
Via email or a popup not like the usual ones from Windows Update.
