Does not matter what happens with advances to wireless technology now or in the future...wired will always be able to be made better than wireless counterparts....
Wired will always be able-to-be technically better than wireless.

It's very hard to buy a pure wired router at the SOHO level, most of media work so I prefer reliability....
There Gbit wired/wireless routers (Linksys for example) and you can check what channel the neighbors of who's on which channel around you.

I too have found that my 10Mb wired.
Upgrading may get you a better physical device, however, it doesn't seem like you are pushing to use the actual bandwidth provided by the ISP at any one time).

Cheers a connection is the wired....
We also slow in the rooms and deck, so the cat5 cable really helped a lot with a better connection.

Set your ip on your wired connection (I am using Win 7, but I think it is ....
Your wired connection however need a static ip configured because it will act as a router for your xp machine.
The wireless network shouldn't require a static ip.
