I need to install a 4 prong wiring harness for a trailer hookup. Is it a splice situation or is the a plug somewhere I can find to plug into.

I was thinking the 4 pin might be easier to install from the other side .

I bought 2 new wiring harness. (American Auto Wire) The engine and fwd. lamp harness. And on the inside of the connector is this black goo like tar. Should I clean it off or is it some kind of conductive sealant? It looks like the same sealant...
