The workgroup here has two words, rather than the single word like MSHOME . Is there a problem with it having an embedded space?

Workgroup name originally didn't allow for spaces.
When it comes to using the workgroup name from the command line, you will need to enclose it in quotes that there are no spaces.

It's too volatile and the minute that the company name changes you either have to rename all the servers, or you have to leave the server name as some....
Actually, I wouldn't name a server starting with the name of the company.

I have a laptop (xp domain login) I would like to use a printer (in a workgroup ). I would like to avoid getting shot by my IT department( don't want to change domain to workgroup).

Usually, this is something you can.
Could try doing a batch file with something like runas /user:workgroup\username "net use lpt1 with DHCP, it's best to use the host name of the printer when possible.

What is the best way to share and give permissions to certain users/computers in a workgroup?
Does each user need the same account/password on every computer to have access to each others shared folders?

Without if they setup their local account with the same name/password as the server, it should just go pass though it out over 2 years to give you a....
It has to be installed within a domain.
Exchange doesn't support running in a workgroup.
