Got hundreds of em paperbacks hardbacks some never been opened and all by popular authors, wife used to read a lot and collect them.

What is the fastest known sort algorithm for absolute worst case? I don't care about best case and am assuming a gigantic data set if that even matters.

You aren't going to find an "absolute fastest" assuming a worst....
Entire books are written on search/sort algorithms.
O(nlog n) mean case, O(n^2) in the worst case order it is currently in).
Assuming randomly sorted data, quicksort.

Whenever you hit poor performance or OutOfMemory exceptions (or weird threading issues too), the first thing that comes to my mind is that someone has inappropriately used HashMaps. The sad thing is that it IS the root cause in most cases.
