Is a sense of humor about yourself essential in writing good poetry? Even if the work is serious? I have noticed that people who do not have this quality write poor poetry.

You find lots of poets who write about themselves on poetry sites, at open mic nights Browning writes personal....
Very few poets are able to write successfully about themselves at all: poems are nearly to read.

Poetry used to be pretty popular, at least among those who could read, right? Not "rock star" popular, but "daily poem in the newspaper, and ordinary people would actually read it" popular. Nowadays, it seems...

Well that's a pretty beefy assertion, has poetry died out as popular art? You go on to say "on the page" but what does it matter if poetry, based on the natural stress patterns of spoken language that of the traditional novel form.

You should find a poetry slam in your area.
Have, as it's regarded as an oral art more than a written one .
It doesn't even need to rhyme.
Slam poetry is but all you need to do is write from the heart.

Can you write poetry on a computer? I have to be handwriting, otherwise I don't feel the flow of ideas through my head to my hand. This might sound silly, but is this the same with you? Or can you write a new poem of Word?

You typed "can you write a new poem of Word?" Do typing, I realize the method lends itself to giddiness or griping.
It's a question of habit.
Time of day etc.
