Most companies probably find it easier to replace help desk employees than find good you.
I'd approach much risk.
We hire student programmers out of our Help Desk as often as we hire CS students.

I have more desk sets than I have desks, by a longshot, but the collector in me can't leave well enough alone, so I just bought a 444-style dipless desk set that has two inkwells. I really only use black ink at work, but I suppose I could add something...
