I would like to switch to Linux, but I need some stuff on my Windows XP install. I know that VMWare Workstation can convert a physical machine into a virtual machine, but it's $189. :-/

Alternately (and probably easier), assign a static IP (or use DHCP address XP VM.
Located in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc) on the Windows XP VM pointing to the Windows 7 host the Windows XP box.

I want to run a Windows XP virtual machine, and not pay for any licenses (I already have a valid XP license for installing on the VM). What software would you recommend? Tips on performance and installing are also welcome.

The great thing is that if you download the Windows XP Mode you only have to fill in a password applications installed on virtual Windows....
MS Virtual PC is free, not sure about any of the others .
And Virtual Windows XP for no extra cost.

You could use VMWare converter and VMware server.

To be honest, your requirements....
XP runs okay stuff.
It wasn't very fast, though, mostly because the amount of RAM will be it's biggest limitation .
With far less resources than yours, and I could still run XP in a virtual machine on it.
