Use Teamviewer , by far best and can be configured to be used locally (LAN) .
Use VNC.
Windows XP Home does NOT support inbound Remote Desktop.

Hi, I've wiped an old PC and would like to put a copy of XP Pro upgrade edition on it. However, I no longer have my old XP Home and Windows 98 discs for when it asks for a previous version's disc. Any way to get around this? Thanks

Canged? Was this a P2V conversion? Is the XP guest on different storage then the rest? Is the storage OK? I'd try building another XP machine to see if it's that guest or something odd.

By "it is not the built in firewall" I assume that you mean you have confirmed it is completely turned off .

Hanging during that stage may or may not be a service .
If anything shows up, like disk errors, diagnose that problem .
