I forgot about this and a recent conversation brought it to mind. One of my bucket list things is to make a Shetland ring shawl.
Shetland ring shawls were/are made by the Shetland islanders and are in my opinion, probably the finest examples of the work...

The only way I can think to felt the yarn so that it stays looking like yarn so you can use it for weft, is to get yourself a big work table and cover it with small-bubble bubble-wrap.
