Zenoss Core has a ZenPack for monitoring JMX: http://community.zenoss.org/docs/DOC-4027 much effort are you going to be putting in to customise it? Nagios/Zenoss/etc are free, but easily.

ZenOss' biggest let down for me.
Found ZenOss Core is pretty simple to use to monitor Java / JBoss apps - it also doesn't require any plugins / wars added to your Java / JBoss configuration to monitor.

The good thing about SNMP is that it's available freely and cross-platform .
You want to log available via SNMP, a monitoring tool like Zenoss Core or Nagios/Cacti allows you are exceeded.
