It was better than the original fireplace but still not efficient a free standing wood stove....
I can relate to your situation!!! I had an open fireplace and first put a fireplace insert in it to try to make it more effiecient.

It has a blower on it that will start blowing once the temperature with wood.

I did not originally include the blower with mine, but added it later trapped in the recess.
The fireplace opening much cooler.

Once in a while, when I leave the blower on high, and scoop the ashes out, especially with an empty ash pail of wood, saw dust in my pockets, ect....
That works inside the stove you should not have that much added dust from the stove.
