Why do applets have such a low adoption level, compared for example against Flash ? Is it because they are technological disadvantages, or is it just an issue of popularity?

Flash adoption adoption rates vary from 70% - 90% depending....

Currently looking into learn new technology and silverlight is on the potential list. However, I was wondering, will the popularity of jquery and it's awesomeness reduce the adoption of silverlight and therefore the need and reward from learning it? Cheers...

No....with our first adoption we knew lots date, the location of birth....
