I'm purchasing a server with 8 SAS disks to perform database intensive procedures. Currently the main bottleneck is is large index scans in postgres.

I've heard that the write performance of RAID 5 can be appalling at times. While I want the redundancy that it provides I don't want to sacrifice my database insert/update times.

When between performance and space.
Every RAID5 write will cause at least 3 writes (plus a CRC calculation) .
Then the write buffer on the RAID 5 will quickly overflow and your straight into the "poor write performance" of RAID 5.

In your RAID controller management interface? If you can give us more details, we can probably provide more information on that front, since that's probably very specific to your particular RAID setup.

You seem concerned about loss of data quite a bit, yet you're copying it all to a RAID 0? In RAID....
You do not need to do anything with the nVidia raid software a massive RAID 0 and off you go.
You will need a backup.

The most fault tolerant solution is a RAID 5 or....
These drives are dirt cheap, in fact sometimes cheaper than, they are probably fine but defeat the point of cheap external storage .
In a simple linux md-raid level 5 configuration.
