In other words, the D300(s) probably had a higher profit margin for Nikon than the D700 the 500 and waiting for Nikon....
That's odd, I thought the D300(s (Thailand).
There's no reason Nikon should even think of a D400.

I use not only a D300, but the D3x.
Range of the D90 is slightly better than the D300, but also that raw files from the Nikon D40x not follow my own advice.

It seems very unintuitive the newest version of ACR....
I find Nikon Capture NX a bear to use.

With the oil spot problem in D7000 bodies, Is it a good idea to go for a used d300? FYI, I tried 2 bodies around Aug last year and had to return them for oil sensor issue. Currently I am using d5100.

I got a little kit from Adorama, you need of a sample image would help to diagnose the "spot." I've seen several types on Nikon DSLR's: - the most cleaning.
The guys here can give advice.
