Ahmadinejad

Ahmedinejad is kind of like Mikhail Gorbachev - he is more popular outside his country than in it, because his views and positions resonate with non-Iranians who share his outlook and his ability to "stick it up to the US". But I hear his popularity in Iran has fallen recently due to the economy and the high inflation rate. All comes down to the economy at the end of the day for most leaders. Make sure you're not hurting your constituents' pockets. source

I would not want to take a position on the facts of the case, or even on who might be behind the "story". The man has lots of enemies, inside and outside Iran. If it keeps him busy for a while, I would think that it was a good thing. source

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was born jewish and converted to islam according to a report in londons Daily Telegraph. The Saturday report cited a photo from 2008 which showed Ahmadinejad holding up his identity card, bearing his former last name,Sabourjian, a common Jewish name in Iran. The name was Jewish for cloth weaver, and that the Iranian presidents family had changed their name when they converted to islam. source

I don't know if they'll be able to play this off as merely a repression of a peaceful protest, given that there was also some degree of genuine vandalism and looting that occurred. Not to an extent sufficient to warrant the response, but too much to make the protesters appear completely innocent. source
