Just when I thought that we wouldn't be able to go skiing this year, we decided to go to the US. I just looked up the oversize fee for United airlines. $220 so an extra $440 for us
Seems a bit steep but it is still worth our while to take our own gear...

Qantas and other airlines, e.g.
July 15, 2011, for travel on or after August 15, 2011 to no longer allow 2 bags (ski kit counting as one 2nd bag) as 'free' checked allowance.

Most of our larger air terminals now have a service where you can securely wrap stuff you want to check in, you go thru customs and security first.
