Flashchat is good, but heavier on the server.
AJAX chat is probably the best of the existing options.

I don;t like how it works have been fixed since SMF 2.0 RC3, and it's a fairly big security risk to not upgrade.
(this will also keep all the mod data) Using Ajax chat right now.
