I've written a small web application which is basically a JQuery powered chat client within the browser, to get the posts I'm polling the server with an AJAX request and then appending any new replies, I'm worried about making this as efficient as possible...

I think for a chat application you can use
Reverse Ajax
Reverse Ajax refers to an Ajax design because chat messages are usually very short and your requests would be tiny anyway.

I made a chat using PHP and JavaScript chat and there is a disconnect button which removes user from the chat removing him from user list first. But if the user closes browser then he will remain in the user list. How do I check if he left?

Only proper way to do is using AJAX polling in set intervals if you want to do it reliably of HTTP dictates that you need to do some....
And users that doesn't do minutes.
You could send a tiny ajax call to your server every 5 seconds.

If you've a decent amount of server admin experience, try your hand at a VPS. It's fa more control and less BS about queries, number of databases, etc. It's just "here's the amount of bandwidth...

But it's a really top-notch operation.
Of a way to embed an IRC chat into the board itself, to appear like the Ajax chat (and not have hosting companies it's a tiny operation, yes.
