The past day or 2, I've been seeing windows Security alerts when I start the computer.
First it will say that antivirus is out of date/off, then
it will say Windows firewall is off.

Your Avast did actually alert you from scratch.
Paid or free, a virus can sneak by.
Versions work very well.
