What can I do during my undergraduate medical studies in India, to maximize my chances of getting into a residency in the US? (Reseach, Volunteer work?) Apart from, of course, studying hard for the MLE.

Go allopathic their tuition is FAR cheaper.

I highly doubt that....
I don't think there is anything to worry about if you are currently an allopathic student ignorant butt on the USMLE.
This number has gone up in recent years despite more people careers .
Of US allopathic seniors match.

I was wondering about being elected to AOA: do med schools really just elect the top 10-20 students based on class rank? Or are there other factors that matter?

Good luck Most schools use grades from years 1 ... .
Best thing to do is ask an administrator or upper classmen .
Some are objective (grades and test scores), whereas others are based on grades + peer recommendations .
Each school has different set of rules.
I've been dismissed from medical school due to academic reasons. What other options do I have if I want to stay in medicine. I'm a 3rd/4th year now.
