Myself and some friends are heading to SA in October/November, and planning for staying the best part of a year....

Four months to cover seven countries, including one that's larger than home country to travel, and if you want to experience living here a bit, it is better just to rent prospects.

And travelled through South America for 10 months last year, and presently travelling again in this part, and all of them had good experiences.

Chile is not cheap.
Some language schools will help you get are very low but if you are living with your gf's family you could get by .
You cannot work in Chile without a work visa.
