So, I have heard that watts aren't necessarily directly related to how loud a receiver is. I'm just wondering how I would go about figuring out what my minimum threshold for buying a receiver is in regards to watts/whatever other measure of power dictates...

A 1 watt being rated for 100, 200,....
A 1 watt speaker will take 100 watts as long as its a clean a couple of things I was taught in my younger days of car audio in my quest for SPL's.

You can measure maximum modulation level, or average modulation level over a specified period of time, but neither of them really is loudness-bill-to-lower-the-volume-on-loud....
That there is no realistic way to measure "loudness".
Can I use a car amplifier for home use to lower energy comsuption? I've heard from word of mouth that if i use a portable ac connected to a car amplifier with the proper wattage, it can lower the AC's energy consumption. Is this true?

You can not use a car audio power amplifier to power a home audio speakers.
They do not have the same power as a home audio.
That car audio is designed for a small area.

For the sound you want, never for "loudness." A limiter like this http://www.manley.com/melopb.php will increase perceived loudness.
